Barcelona looking at Onana

Barcelona are weighing up a potential swoop for Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana, according to Catalunya Radio.

Marc-Andre ter Stegen remains the undisputed first choice between the posts for the La Liga title holders, but Jasper Cillessen, who has only made 28 appearances for almost three years and has never received a proper chance of challenging Ter-Stegen despite being a regular Netherlands international, has been linked with departure. Should that happen, Barcelona would be in need of a quality backup option, and Onana, 22, might be willing to act as one for a while.

The young Cameroonian started his football journey at the Samuel Eto o Foundation and joined Barca s La Masia academy at the age of 13. Five years later he made his move to Ajax, and became a regular member…

Simeone hopes Joao Felix maintains strong start

Joao Felix has once again started the season positively and Diego Simeone hopes the Atletico Madrid forward can maintain his form this time around.

After his €126million arrival from Benfica, Joao Felix contributed two goals and an assist in his first six LaLiga games for Atletico in 2019-20 but the remainder of his campaign was punctuated by injuries that made it difficult for him to consistently produce.

Atleti started this season by thrashing Granada 6-1, with the Portugal international winning a penalty, assisting a goal for Angel Correa and scoring one of his own in an impressive display.

Although Simeone s side were held to a goalless draw by newly promoted Huesca in midweek, Joao Felix had six attempts on goal and created two chances for his team-mates.…

Cavani had coronavirus and thought of quitting before Man Utd move

Edinson Cavani had coronavirus and thought about quitting football before signing with Manchester United.

Veteran striker Cavani and his girlfriend tested positive for COVID-19 following a holiday that saw them join former Paris Saint-Germain team-mates in Ibiza, a trip that also saw Neymar, Angel Di Maria, Leandro Paredes, Mauro Icardi, Keylor Navas and Marquinhos contract the virus.

At that point the 33-year-old Cavani was without a club following the expiration of his PSG contract in June, but United handed him a one-year deal, with an option for another, on deadline day.

Cavani spent some of his time working on farmland in his native Salto, Uruguay, and thought about packing in life as a professional footballer.

It was something we kept to ourselves…

Vera Pauw insists she ‘will never win from a lie’ over body-shaming allegations

Republic of Ireland Women’s manager Vera Pauw insists she “will never win from a lie” and will have to carry allegations she body-shamed players for the rest of her life.

The Dutchwoman has previously strongly refuted the claims made in a report on misconduct in the National Women’s Soccer League relating to the period she was in charge of Houston Dash.

Further allegations from former players emerged this week and have overshadowed the team’s preparations for the Women’s World Cup which will see them play France at Tallaght Stadium in their final game before departing.

“I think it is the same story as in December. It is something from a few anonymous players and how can you defend yourself against a lie?” she told a press conference.

UEFA Europa League Preview: Torino return to Europe after 20-year absence

Torino make a return to the major European stage on Thursday when they face Brommapojkarna in the UEFA Europa League third qualifying round.

The Italian outfit reached the final of this competition in its previous guise of the UEFA Cup in 1992, before going down on away goals to Ajax.

They played in the Intertoto Cup third round back in 2002 but last featured in a top-level European competition when being edged out in a UEFA Cup Winners Cup quarter-final against Arsenal in 1994.

Tony Adams goal proved the only difference that day as Arsenal progressed 1-0 on aggregate, and Torino have failed to grace the European stage ever since.

It has been a tumultuous period for the Turin club in that time plagued by financial troubles, they have bounced between the t…

Promising Australia international Nathan Burns has had his contract with Greek giants AEK Athens terminated.

Low lauds Schweinsteiger return

Joachim Low was delighted to see Bastian Schweinsteiger score Germany s crucial second goal as a late substitute in Sunday s 2-0 Euro 2016 win over Ukraine.

The world champions had struggled to find a killer second after Shkodran Mustafi s first-half header put them in front at Stade Pierre-Mauroy, and Manuel Neuer made three strong saves to keep their lead intact.

Schweinsteiger appeared as a 90th-minute substitute to a rapturous reception, and the noise levels among the Germany fans reached a peak when the Manchester United man converted Mesut Ozil s cross with almost the final kick of the match.

And Low was thrilled to see his captain make such an impact after battling a knee ligament problem for much of 2016.

I m very happy for Bastian Schweinsteig…

Eredivise Preview: Schreuder issues Twente rallying call, PSV hoping to return to form

Debt-riddled Twente will have extra motivation as they look to get their Eredivise season back on track with a victory over Willem II on Friday evening.

Twente, who had lost four consecutive league fixtures before last week s draw with NAC Breda, were docked three points by the Dutch Football Association (KNVB) this week for failing to reduce debts racked up during the renovation of their home stadium – De Grolsch Veste – in 2011.

The deduction sees the Enschede outfit drop a place in the Eredivisie standings to ninth, six points adrift of the UEFA Europa League play-off positions.

We had been informed as a staff that this scenario could play out, we have to accept it and continue to fight as a team, said Twente coach Alfred Schreuder.

The team owe …
